HOKA Runaway Half 2023
Back in May we had a huge weekend, starting on Saturday: after collecting our bibs and doing a little shake-out run in the morning, we headed to Bill & Tony’s for a pre-race-carb-loading.
Sunday was race day and Sydney did not disappoint: think beautiful sunrise, warm weather and great vibes all around. For those not racing, the cheer point was the place to be - we had music, flags, megaphones and drinks. Crew, friends, pets and family all came together to cheer for runners known and unknown and we only left once the last runner ran past us. The cheer spirit was high the whole way through.
After we race, we celebrate! To wrap up things, we headed to the Forrester’s for a chill afternoon surrounded again by friends and family, and many racing stories to share. In total, we had 48 hours of non-stop fun and we can’t wait until next time.
Gold Coast Marathon 2023
“One thing’s for sure”, Dan said as we entered the 6th hour of our 9 hour drive from Sydney to the Gold Coast.
“We all better run f*cking well tomorrow.”
With the majority of us due to fly up to the Gold Coast on Friday afternoon for race weekend, chaos ensued as we woke up to news of cancelled flights with no options to rebook. A few of us decided to bite the bullet and piled into a car to drive the 845 km up to Queensland, while others got creative with their flight routes (sadly for Jared though, PeliCan but JetStar Can’t).
It was far from the ideal start to the race weekend. The good thing about starting at rock bottom though, is that there’s nowhere to go but up.
The weekend soon turned on its head as PB after PB was set during the half marathon against the backdrop of a stunning sunrise and perfect race conditions on Saturday morning.
We celebrated with a much needed recovery session at the Lululemon clubhouse that afternoon, where we got to connect with running crews from all over the country. There was some interest in making it a big night but in the end, we turned in early in anticipation of cheering on those doing the full marathon the next day.
Looking a little worse for wear, the team rolled out at 6.30am to lend their support to those attempting the full marathon up and down the coast on Sunday morning. The smiles on their faces as they raced towards the finish line belied the pain they must have been in after running 42 kilometres.
The weekend wrapped up at the Henchman with the Salt Social afterparty, where there were cheesy tunes and happy hour cocktails in equal measure. With the shapes everyone was throwing on the dancefloor, you would have never guessed that most of the people there had run a marathon earlier that day - the perfect end to a memorable weekend.
